News

Richard has news from India. There is also a tiny paragraph inside the front cover of the Sunday Times.

In other news, we just came back from the family service at my parents’ church, where B was made very welcome and given an important job – placing a wooden animal in the crib. Unfortunately when asked what animal it was, he said in a high clear voice “Goat” – which, to be fair, it did resemble more than the donkey it was supposed to represent!

Happy Christmas Eve.

very belated thanks

to Em and Rhys for their stonking pre Christmas sing and drink party on Saturday.

B surprised us by staying up late without melt-down, in fact nearly stealing the show at one point as Rhys had shown him the keyboard and said he didn’t mind him pressing buttons. We were singing “See amid the winter snow” and in the second chorus B pressed some random rhythm buttons and we had to try to finish the carol over a soft rock sort of beat without corpsing – I failed, and sat in tears of laughter unable to sing on. B danced away clapping and flirting.

I was nervous of the first big singing get-together without Michael. It was sad, but not as difficult as I expected.

Edit: Jen has flickr’d some great pics…

I jinxed it…

…by saying how well Michael’s memorial fund was doing online, I managed to stop anyone else from donating in the last 24 hours :(

Snippets

If you’re crying while you’re lying down, your tears run into your ears, and itch.

Benjamin is *this close* to being advertised on ebay. No, cancel that. Freecycle. (I know I love him to bits but sometimes he really does drive me to distraction. ) I am very, very lucky to be blessed with such good friends – I was reassured this is perfickly normal behaviour (and parent’s reaction!) and bathtime was turned into a game rather than a screaming match. Oh the relief.

I’ve put some more B pics on flickr but the page is being weird and slow so not linking it atm.

Christmas is jolly nearly wrapped. Most cards sent by deadline (I’m so disillusioned with work these days I can be quite brazen about doing other stuff on the desk, so spent this afternoon writing them). So much looking forward to seeing family at the end of the week – roll on thursday night :)

Housegroup end of term party here tomorrow night – should be good, but need to do a mammoth amount of cleaning first! good thing I’m not in work on wednesdays…

Amazing response

The Michael Blakey Memorial Fund has racked up nearly a grand in just a week since going online at Just Giving. This is in addition to several donations direct to Tong-Len UK, through the Lancashire funeral directors, and raised by retiring collections at carol services and concerts in Edinburgh and King’s Lynn. I am overwhelmed, but not surprised.

I have a lump in my throat realising more and more about the man I thought I knew well. So many sides to a very private man. So many lives are touched by his death. One man wrote to Michael’s mother who didn’t know him but whose father had been vicar at St John in the Wilderness, McLeod Ganj, in the Fifties. He felt a connection just from having read about him.

I know £853.92 isn’t quite a twentieth of the target amount (to buy the land and start the hostel) but I still think it’s an amazing achievement in just the first week.
